Bolero: An Everyday Classic

Bolero: a jacket ending above or at the waistline, with or without a collar, lapel and sleeves, worn open in the front.

I absolutely adore the Bolero. Being a girl on the curvier side, I often find myself looking for jackets, cardigans and shrugs to cover up my not so lovely arms (well, I think they are not so lovely! My Husband disagrees.). The Bolero is a must have for any wardrobe. Boleros are great for emphasizing your waist and enhancing your hour glass figure. You can use it to dress up your outfit after work, or even dress down a cocktail dress for a more casual feel. There are so many styles and fabric choices you are sure to find one that matches any outfit, even more than one!

The origins of this cropped jacket were a bit tricky to find. The word Bolero is a Spanish word used to describe a traditional form if Spanish dance. This style of jacket was also worn by Matadors and is worn open in the front. The bright colors and embroidery of this Spanish style jacket inspired the Bolero jackets of the 19th century.
via Google Images

Who wouldn’t want to show off those beautiful colors! The women of the 19th century recognized this beauty and made the Bolero a must have to every dress. These jackets flaunted embroidery and beautiful fabrics. Collars and lapels were added as well as a way to fasten the jacket in the front. Usually a Bolero will only cover the upper torso, shoulders and arms leaving the waist and hips uncovered. This jacket made an excellent addition to the full skirts and small waist dresses of the era. It also added a touch of width to the shoulders giving the figure a more balanced look.

This must have jacket is made in a variety of fabrics and styles. I have even found them made of lace! <3 Whether its short sleeved or long sleeved you are sure to find one for you. So the next time you are looking for the little something extra to spice up an old outfit, grab a Bolero and feel confident in the warmth of an everyday classic.

Before I go, I just wanted to share some links I found on Etsy of some super cute bolero jackets!

Holiday Leftovers

Edited by Taylor Davies

I think you better just conk me upside the head with a Christmas tree, this holiday season has done a doozie on me! I've gone into total vacation mode, away from New York City, away from the office and deep into the mountains of Idaho. As far away as I am physically, I can't escape our blogging community! I'm so impressed with all of our community members who are balancing their family holiday time with keeping their blogs up to date and sharing their posts on the Links a la Mode board. Spats Are Back! Your Shoes Never Looked So Good...

I have just fallen in love with this idea! I recently did a post about sparkle shoes and mentioned dazzling up your heels on your own. Well, this is just one more way to make an old pair of shoes new again!

via wikipedia
Brown rose and pinstriped Ankle Boot Spats
source: spats by hhfashions on etsy Click Here!
SPATS! Spats you say? Honestly it was a while before I even knew the term, but I know the product! Spats (a shortened version of Spatterdashes which were worn by horsemen and acted as a sort of mud flap.) have been around since the late 19th century. They were a symbol of the well dressed city man/woman, Conan Doyle wrote in Sherlock Homes, The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge: “From his spats to his gold-rimmed spectacles he was a Conservative, a churchman, a good citizen, orthodox and conventional to the last degree.” There are many designers out there like spatterdash.com that want to bring the spat back!
maidestreasuries.deviantart.com
What I love about spats is that you can dress up any heel or boot and give it a whole different feel. Its amazing how it can completely change your heels and give the illusion of wearing an ankle boot!
Steampunk fashion has probably been the best thing for Spats in years! LOL It definitely has brought about a sort of revival for this classic footwear accessory! You can find a million spats for sale in all sorts of styles from great shops in communities like Etsy. I always like to encourage everyone to shop local/small business! Whats great about a lot of these shops... custom orders!

As always, if you don't have a lot of money but you do have a crafty thumb D.I.Y! Check out some of these links to get you started!

Don't Forget! GIVEAWAY!

Don't forget about the Giveaway! See my previous post WCO by Nancy Giveaway for all the instructions on how to enter! You don't wanna miss out on the fabulous hair accessory for FREE!

Spontaneous Happiness

The other day my Husband heard an interview on NPR that made him want to read a book. Now, this doesn't happen very often, so after speaking with him for a bit I decided to pick up the book and give it a read. This book is called "Spontaneous Happiness" by Dr. Andrew Weil. I am not ashamed to admit that because of a chronic health issue I deal with slight bouts of depression, insomnia and a poor immune system. So if there is something out there that might help me feel better, I tend to investigate.
Dr. Weil talks about having an emotional sea level. What is the norm and what is the extreme (either higher or lower)? How do we measure happiness? He brought up a point about wanting things we can not have in the moment and measuring happiness by that, like, the only thing that will make me happy at this moment is a diet coke... but I don't have that right now.  So instead of saying I will only be happy if I can have the diet coke, I should be happy with what I know will really happen. I will not get the diet coke. So I will achieve the same happiness with the off-brand diet cola. Well, not exactly the way he said it but stay with me.
Being happy all the time is not possible. But being content or having comfort or serenity are possible. Life will be what it will be. We are lucky to guest star. Why worry about what you cannot control or will never have and look at the here and now in your life. You will have happiness, but don't stand around and dream of what you will never attain. The pressure of "over positive" attitudes can be just as damaging.
I find it hard to fight the human condition or at least my damaged Americanized version of it.
I will have to keep you posted on this read. I am only 2 chapters in after all, so I am sure there will be much more to discuss.

Fashion-Courage by Wendy's Lookbook

Wendy's Lookbook has been an inspiration to me since I stumbled upon her site a few months ago. Wendy has a love for fashion that easily shows in her outfits, accessories, they way she speaks about fashion and most importantly to me, the way she wears her clothes. Wendy's ability to put together a beautiful outfit is amazing!

I really wanted to share this video with all of you and encourage you to check out Wendy's Lookbook, and Wendy's Lookbook YouTube. Each time I watch this it gives me goose bumps!
And for the record, this is my personal opinion to share, in no way am I affiliated with Wendy's Lookbook, I am just a fan!

I Change My Blog Like I Change My Mind... Constantly

I think I have a problem... I change my Blog too often. I just get so tired at looking at the same ol' stuff ya know. I guess I haven't "found" my image or "thing" yet. I don't even know what this blog is about!
I started blogging because, well, I thought it would be fun. But I am telling you here and now, I am probably on of the most fickle people on the planet. My interests change from day to day. I draw, I sing, I make jewelry and who else knows. I am fascinated with fashion, art, coffee, I mean the list goes on and on!
But there is nothing I can ever stick with. Or at least I haven't found anything I rock at. Its that age old thing (I don't even really know if its age old. LOL) good at everything, great at nothing.

I am great at nothing. Well, maybe talking. I am great at talking!

My Husband is always asking me what will make me happy. Spiff! I don't know! Oh well. I guess we shall see how many more times I will change the way this blog looks. And eventually, something will come out of it! :)

Maybe...

The mypressi TWIST! Get Great Espresso at Home!

As most of you probably know, I am in LOVE with Coffee! It is the only affair I will ever have, and thankfully my Husband only has one mistress too, coffee! LOL Not only do I love coffee, but it is my career. I am a full time Barista/Manager and I am always looking at whats new and how can I get one!
This is a mypressi TWIST. I have fallen in love with this contraption. You don't need to go out and spend $1000 to have prefect espresso at home. This is what you need! I was surprised to see it is only retailing at $150. It uses N2O cartridges to help push the water through the espresso so you get proper extraction. These are perfectly safe to use. Lots of business that make their own whipped cream use these same cartridges. And you can use one cartridge multiple times! :) This is so amazing! I love where coffee is heading and I really love that the public is interested in a "GOOD" cup of coffee!

A Necklace For Lori

A Necklace For Lori!Posted by Picasa

I was so excited the other day! ( I feel like I am always excited... ) I was able to re-up on some jewelry making supplies. I have just really begun making jewelry and I find I really enjoy it. I do not claim to be amazing, and I will tell you the only reason I have an Etsy Shop is because I thought people were going to accost me until I die if I didn't! Apparently, just because you make something means you should sell it. I happen to disagree. But what I do agree with is sharing with friends!
My dearest friend Dianne is a fan of the trinkets I create, so she asked if I might be able to whip something up for her daughter, Lori, for Christmas. I was happy to oblige!
I found this beautiful pendant at the local Hobby Lobby. I had to have it! I just knew it would be perfect! I used 18g Parawire Vintaj to make the chain and findings. I also found the beads on clearance at Hobby Lobby, but not the pearls. The pearls are just plastic, I got those from Dianne's personal craft stash! I benefit from crafty friends with too much excess!! I used bail pliers to form the chain. I like using the pliers more than a mandrel. Although, I don't even own a jump ring mandrel. I wonder if using one would make the process of making the jump rings go faster? Any suggestions from fellow jewelry makers, please comment below!
Hope you enjoy the photos, and feel a little inspired to create!

Vintage Beauties

I had to share this picture. It is amazing to me how far fashion, makeup and the perception of beauty have come. I mean, what we consider hot is no where near this! LOL These women are BEAUTIFUL, and still, I think the look silly! But, I can at least appreciate them. What I find very interesting is how depressed all these women look. I wonder if you just didn't smile in those days. Thank GOD for the invention of hair products! I mean, I could not have lived in those days with curl like mine! <gasp>
What I do love is how they used other elements to make themselves beautiful. Yes the didn't have all the makeup we do now, but they had some. The choice of headpieces are what I love. Enjoy!
